SSI EXPLORERS The SSI Explorers program allows children starting at age six to go underwater and sample the different ways they can explore the aquatic world around them. They will gain a solid foundation in ocean conservation and have the opportunity to experience four main aquatic adventures: snorkelling, scuba diving, freediving, and swimming like a real mermaid. Below the Surface Dive club
Join today only £20 per person per month.
Below the surface has an amazing dive club, welcoming divers of all agencies, we run out of Todmorden sports centre 7.30-9pm on a Thursday & Friday evening. We get together students & qualified alike with dive masters & instructors on hand to help refresh any skills divers may want to practice . It usually ends in a beer at the local in Hebden Bridge where we talk about the next trip & peoples wants & wishes for the coming seasons diving. The club is only £20 pp per month for a membership of a single night, choosing the Thursday or the Friday , or £30 for dual membership where you can come to either or both nights, kit can be provided FOC for new divers. Tanks & kit if required need to be ordered a tank fee of £4 applies. Call or message for details & joining form. For those of you seeing this from the Skipton Divers site, Skipton Divers formally Skipton Buddy Divers was originally set up in 1993 as a club by Bill Painter & Below the Surface to keep our divers diving, although Skipton Divers no longer exists here at Below the Surface we still have a strong club of over 40 members & more are always welcome.

About Us
Below The Surface is one of the oldest dive schools in Yorkshire, we started in 1991 to provide quality diving education we made the decision to provide a more personal feel to learning to dive by only taking small groups rather than the large impersonal groups students can find themselves in. We are now very proud to be a PADI Dive Centre, an SSI Dive Centre, BSAC Centre & a PADI Youth Training Centre.,
BILL PAINTER
PADI Master Instructor, SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer, BSAC instructor & Owner
Bill has been diving for over 50 years , since the age of 14. He was a military diver until he left in 1986 and has been teaching recreational diving ever since. He is a PADI master instructor but also BSAC, SSI & SAA. He started Below The Surface dive school in 1991. He has enjoyed diving all over the world and has taught professionally all over the world.
SAL PAINTER
PADI Staff Instructor, SSI Assistant instructor trainer & Owner
I joined Below The Surface in 2009 on a Discover Scuba & have been here ever since. Now no longer a student, although always learning! I am now a PADI Staff Instructor & EFR first aid Instructor & an SSI Assistant instructor trainer as well as looking after the accounts, advertising, admin, running the dive trips & helping Bill in the dive centre, when I can.
IAN BARNES
BSAC Instructor , PADI Assistant Instructor & SSI Assistant Instructor.
Ian is an key member of the team, having also come through with us from an initial Discover Scuba session & without his help we would struggle, he is loved by the students he supported as a divemaster & discover scuba divers love his sessions. He is an accomplished diver with fantastic skills & an invaluable member of our team.
BRIAN KERR
PADI Divemaster
2022 saw Brian has completed his PADI Divemaster course but Brian has been Bills right hand man for many years joining below the surface in 1996 and working up the qualifications whilst all the time being there whenever we need help. He likes nothing better than to dive in the Scottish waters and St Abbs is a particular favourite. Always up for a dive trip, Brian is an invaluable member of the team always providing help and support in so many ways.
THOMAS RICH
PADI Divemaster
Tom is a great asset to the team & we hope he realises it , he has a great attitude with the students & provides qualified divers support & guidance with skills beyond his years. He also came to Below the Surface as a Discover scuba & training & has come up through the qualifications to become one of the first Junior Divemaster is the world & now recently completing his Divemaster.
CHRIS RICH
PADI Rescue Diver & Standby Diver
Chris was dragged along by Thomas when he wanted to dive but has become a great diver with the skills to become a divemaster but is happy to help us as a Rescue diver & standby diver & always offers help with those who as new divers need a little support when taking those first steps on their own after qualifying. We appreciate his support greatly & is a valued member of the team.
Alex Dunston
BSAC Instructor, PADI DM & SSI DMT
Alex says of diving... I started diving as a hobby with my dad as it was something he had always wanted to try, neither of us thought I would end up obsessed with diving as I am. The thing I enjoy most about diving is, its such a different place, everything slows down, there is something so tranquil about being underwater and its very peaceful. Having said that when you get involved with the diving community you feel like you have gained another family & that's definitely been the case with below the surface.

- Wednesday to Friday 10.30-5 Saturday 10.30-4 Please note we are primarily a dive school so on rare occasions we may all be required for teaching or we have a trip the centre may be closed. So please do call if you need to confirm we are open.
The dive centre in Hebden is small but a tardis in terms of stock available, with on street parking & a car park to the rear why not pop in. Unlike the internet kit is available to try on, knowledgeable staff to help you & instructors on site to talk courses & point you in the right direction.
